A Fashion Great

Learning to ride a bike can be exhilarating, traumatising and overwhelming as  the child , having not yet mastered balance, steering and pedalling; but once its clicks, it’s the easiest thing to do and becomes so much fun once  learnt, that the child doesn’t want to stop riding.  Referred to as one of Italy’s best fashion designers and noted for his well-tailored designs, is none other than  Giorgio Armani.

Giorgio Armani was born July 11 1934,  in Piacenza, Italy. Originally, the young Armani had his heart set on becoming a doctor and he studied medicine and photography before completing military service. It was during his service that he realised that the sight of blood was too much to bear and to conclude that career of choice wasn’t for him. Armani then started out as a window dresser at La Rinascente, at the time Milan’s largest department store. He then moved on to become a seller in the men’s department. It is here Armani, attained his experience in the marketing perspective of the fashion industry. Afterwards, Armani worked at Nino Cerruti’s men’s clothing company, Hitman as an assistant designer for  6 years before moving on to Nino Cerruti, where he designed menswear. His remarkable skills were in such high demand that Armani offered freelance to other manufactures while still working at Cerutti.

During the late 1960’s Armani befriended architectural draftsman Sergio Galeotti, who encouraged him to open his own business. But this wouldn’t materialize until Armani was greatly acknowledged for his contribution and work at the Sala Bianaca in the Pitti Palace in Florence. Through that recognition Armani was then ready to fly on his own wings.

Finally, in 1975 along with partner Sergio Galeotti he created the Giorgio Armani Spa in Milan and debuted a men’s collection under the Armani label that October for spring|summer 1976; the following year he produced a women’s line. The Armani label grew quickly becoming one of the leading names in international fashion with the introduction of several new product lines.  The Armani Jeans was introduced in 1981, followed by the Armani women’s perfume in 1982, Armani men’s fragrance in 1983 and A/X Armani Exchange in 1991; then Armani added Giorgio Armani Golf , Giorgio Armani Underwear and Swimwear, Giorgio Armani Accessories, Armani Junior, Emporio Armani and even moved into household items.

Summer Á La Mode

Summer is fast approaching and we all can’t wait till it gets here. It’s that time of year to bare legs and show off shoulders; moreover time stock up on swimsuits, sandals, sunglasses and hats.  But just because it is the time to relax, doesn’t mean we’re going let our fashion guard down.

So it’s very important we know which trend is hot and which is out, staying current and being fashion forward.

  • Colour-Blocking was a very vibrant trend,  but has given way to the new mix-match look of  bold colours with prints.

  • The maxi look took over the runways and street fashion but as the heat turns up the mid-calf look is coming in.

  • As the neutral camel colours are fading away, the neon colours are lighting up the fashion scene.

  • It seems we’re still loving the safari life as the animal prints and tribal prints are still big.

  • Even though that these colours aren’t loud they are still pretty and sweet, so pastels colours are in.

  • Women all around are so captivated by the sophisticated Peplum look they can’t get enough.

  • The flower power is continuing to hold strong among the prints.

  • Looks like the dare to bare is still on as sheer is becoming a year-round trend.

  • The mullet hem have women crazy for the high-low look on shirts, skirts and dresses.

  • True classics are hard to be forgotten so stripes are still big.

As we all know that some trends come and go by quickly and even make comebacks, so I recommend that you DON’T throw out your clothes but  DO keep them at the back of your wardrobe for a later date.

Catching The Olympic Fever

Everyone is getting ready and all hyped up for this coming Olympics and almost every major magazine has a special on the London Olympics.  With all the glitz and glamour they have added, you can’t help but  admit that the Olympics have never looked so alluring and sensational. Through these pictures we see a wonderful fusion of  fashion, beauty, grace and fitness with models like Kate Moss, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Britt Maren, Natalia Vodianova, Kim West and Jourdan Dunn.  So let’s take a look at some of  my favorites features and let me which you like the best out of the lot.

Bag It

It is  funny how we limit our imagination to only see things as they are and not what else they can be. I  stumbled upon the handbags of spanish designer Inés Figaredo, who is definitely thinking outside the box. Her vivid designs are feminine and fun yet sophisticated, with a touch of retro.

This Madrid-born designer is causing a stir,  she is shaking up how we perceive simple accessories like handbags, with her avant-garde couture designs.  Inés combines style, art and wits for the creation of her handbags that are inspired by imagination, nature and everyday things around her. Overall Inés Figaredo’s collections offer women chic, unique pieces which she hopes will be enjoyed, shared, admired and remain around as heirlooms.

Personally I was not a big handbag fan, I own a select few to which I am very faithful to. Now after viewing Figaredo’s collections, I have become a fan and will be checking out handbags more regularly and looking to add a few more to my existing collection.

The Jack Of All Trades

Everyday is a fashion show and the world is your catwalk – Coco Chanel. This is one of my favorite fashion quotes which helps drive my creativity when putting together my look. Trends come and go and they are the underlying factors that push fashion forward; so great effort is needed to build your desired look and individuality so as to not fall into uniformity of the crowd. Within the fashion world standing out and being noticeable is key and there is the obsession of creating ones own signature look which identifies you.

On that note I am pleased to introduce one of my dear friends, the fabulous Nadine Jack, the creator of many chic unique pieces for any fashion forward woman. The Jack or should I say the Jill of all trades is the classic example of beauty and brains, making her mark within the local Barbadian fashion with her JackJewellery and Otra Vez Clothing designs.

JackJewellery was created in 1994, from the desire to have unique yet affordable pieces to accentuate outfits, thus, her talents began to showcase with her custom-made designs.  As a teenager, Nadine started out experimenting with simple designs made of seed-bead, then she moved on to clay and glass. Now she has graduated to more challenging designs which specializes in  gold-filled/plated pieces, feathers and Kente-Cloth raw materials; and is currently working on adding semi-precious stones, silver, copper and gun-metal into the JackJewellery collection. Nadine believes that no woman should be limited to the cliché “one-style fits all” costume jewellery but rather be able to have diverse pieces which expresses their personal style. She is so committed to this belief that she is willing to work with the client to create a one-of-kind-pieces.  So, If you’re the type of person who doesn’t like to wear the same thing as everyone else, then JackJewellery is definitely for you!

Nadine’s sister company to JackJewellery, is Otra Vez Clothing; it hasn’t officially debuted  a collection as yet but due to demands, their Obi-Afri clutches one of their bestsellers right now. They are made with vivid, ethnic prints which pay homage to the Motherland Africa and are just perfect for the current tribal trend. Also, the clutches can be designed in any print to match an already existing outfit or even shoes, upon request.  Coming Spring of 2013,  Otra Vez will be debut its Capsule Collection featuring a unique perspective on designer pieces and of course, its own fresh, original designs.

So, I recently came across an incredible post by my fellow Barbadian fashion blogger Barrio Dimitri of La mode Dimitri featuring his friend Junior Sealy also a blogger of Six F**ing Feet; entitled “La Mode Dimitri x Eye Q / The Eye Project”. The two took on the challenge of finding the perfect pair of sunglasses for spring/summer 2012 season at the Eye Q store at Limegroove here in Barbados.

I was indeed truly motivated by the post and thus the following inspiration ….. thanks guys.

Some people say the bigger the better, hmm really? Well, apparently it’s true when it comes to this year’s eyewear designs. May it be big in size or design, these frames have an eccentric look, with slightly wacky and retro shapes. With this trend taking off, seems like all are in favor and thus, the eyes have it.

So, be prepared to be tricked out!!!

Tribal and Aztec

When you hear the words Tribal and Aztec your mind goes back to history class,  for some of us that time was a bore; but this time around don’t be mistaken. These words are very much alive and kicking in today’s fashion. These prints are striking and bold and add funk to your outfit in a very chic way.

GUESS 30th Anniversary

A little inspiration  goes a long way which can lead to great success.  The motivation for the well-known GUESS brand was from the famous     Marilyn Monroe. Through the  envisioning of Marilyn, GUESS produced exquisite, sexy designs catering to the free-spirited woman. Therefore, when you think of GUESS, the words playful and sexy always come to mind.

However, the major turning point which helped propelled the Guess brand further came when it featured German supermodel Claudia Schiffer in a campaign wearing a black lace bustier shot by Ellen von Unwerth. From that moment onwards she was forever refered to as the ‘GUESS girl’ starring in 6 campaigns from 1989 – 1991.

Now 30 years later, the renowned brand GUESS  is celebrating its milestone in the business with a special capsule, limited-edition collection which revisits the most favorite GUESS looks from the past 30 years. This occasion reunites Schiffer and Unwerth once again for the shoot of GUESS 30th anniversary shoot campaign.

Here are some of the pieces available from the collection:

I know everyone has their own favorite Guess items, my fancy lies between the picture printed t-shirts and the daisy printed jeans. Choose your pick and let me know which are your favorites.
