“I like to think of myself as being fashion-conscious without being a slave to fashion.”
Annni-Frid Lyngstad

I always say “better late than never” so if you truly want to shape up this year, start with shaping up your wardrobe; so let’s get a head start and take action as Spring 2013 is nigh. Many of you are still caught up with the fashion from Fall/Winter 2012 and mesmerized with  Fall/Winter 2013, but now is the time to go through the process of preparing your wardrobe for the big transition to Spring. As the flowers start to bloom it will soon be time to shed all the layers of clothing and start to bare some skin. Therefore, the task at hand now is to carefully go over the profusion of fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2013 and choose your fashion “must haves “.  I don’t mean for you to become a fashion addict following every trend of the season in order to look fab, but identifying with a look, that fits your personal style and staying fashionable, stylish and chic.

The key is to know your silhouette and choose what compliments your body shape best them select only what you feel comfortable and confident in. Also bear in mind to pick pieces, colours, prints and patterns that are versatile which could work for more than one look as some trends tend to change through the course of the season. Finally, remember to enhance your look with accessories, whether they be simple or statement pieces.

Here are some trends that will definitely get you easily noticed:

The wait for Spring 2013 has been very long for me as some of you know that I live in the beautiful tropical island of Barbados leaving me very anxious for the Spring trends to finally hit stores. Leave a comment on the trends that you will be trying.

Showing Your Stripes

Stripes

You don’t have to be a zebra or a referee to show your stripes, but you surely can look divine when wearing them.  Stripes always brings a chic, effortless look to an outfit, but a requires a little effort to avoid looking you belong in the jailhouse.  Stripes whether wide or thin, horizontal, vertical or diagonally, can flatter any body shape but it all depends on the paired pieces that help to give the outfit the extra fabulous look. I know that when we think of stripes the nautical navy and white comes to mind, but stripes comes in variety of colours, so  choose the colours that compliment your skin colour best, when creating your look.

Stripes 2

Stripes can be tricky but we all can find the right stripes that make us feel confident and comfortable.  You have to know which part of your body you want to draw attention and which parts you want to divert attention,  your body shape doesn’t matter. So, for all my apple-shaped ladies, the saying that you should stay away from stripes is a mare myth. In the end, it all comes down to where you wear them and how your style your outfit, plus the key to achieve a successful striped look is matching stripes with solid colours.

Tips to remember:

  • Vertical stripes give you a tall appearance.
  • Horizontal stripes enhances or creates the illusion of curves.
  • Diagonal stripes produces a slimming effect.
  • Stripes only along the border of an outfit gives slimming effects.
  • Darker colours are more slimming that lighter colours.
  • Accentuate the waist with a belt to create a waist line and eliminate the wide effect.

Here are some chic, stylish ideas that any body shape can pull off  for the classic stripe look:

New York Fashion Week: Top Trends

Baby I’m from New York!
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
There’s  nothing you can’t do
Now you’re in New York!
These streets will make you  feel brand new,
Big lights will inspire you,
Hear it for New York!
(New  York, New York, New York)

chorus of New York by Alicia Keys

When Alicia Keys sang those words to her infamous song “New York”, I think she was referring to the recent New York Fashion Week. The opportunity to have been able to experience this year’s shows would have been an honour and privilege. However it wasn’t meant to be but I was lucky enough to have the next best thing, access to plenty of live-streams and pictures of the coverage via the internet. From the exquisite designs to the stylish celebrities and socialites who attended, it is no wonder that New York Fashion Week is one of the most coveted events amongst those who follow the fashion scene or those in the fashion industry. Now that New York Fashion Week is officially over even though I feel it went by too fast, I have closely examined all the spring/summer 2013 looks and I’ll share with you the top trends amongst the designers.

Here are the highlights:

  • The designers turned up the level of sexy with many designs brandishing harnesses.

  • While on the subject of sexy, it couldn’t have been brought to the table without the lace and the sheer, it was draped, layered and mixed with solid garments.

Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera,  Carmen Marc Valvo

Badgley Mischka, Tadashi,  Vivienne Tam

  •  Another appealing look that was on the runway was leather, from all-over pieces to panelled pieces of leather incorporated into designs, it was hot, hot, hot.

  • The cut-out trend is still with us but the designers are mastering this look this season with more sophisticated peek-a-boo here, and there.
